Anxiety occurs when a person perceives to feel in a threatening situation. It is the body’s natural fight or flight system. Anxiety can have an impact on both a person’s mental and physical health. An individual may experience a number of the following signs and symptoms.

Physical effects of anxiety

Sweats, shakes, racing heart/palpitations, irregular breathing, dry mouth, headaches, light-headedness, pins/needles, sickness and butterflies in the stomach.

Physiological effects of anxiety

Inability to relax and loss of concentration, irritability, over emotional, attention seeking and over dependant on others constantly seeking assurance. A person may find it difficult to rationalise their thoughts and feeling and constantly fear the worst.

A person experiencing anxiety issues may experience difficulties in carrying out daily activities, for example work or social situations, also have a significant negative impact on close personal and family relations.

Panic attacks can also be experienced and can be very frightening. A panic attack is an exaggeration of the body’s normal response to fear, stress or excitement.

Many people demonstrate addictive behaviour increasing their use of drugs and alcohol, caffeine and other stimulants in an attempt to overcome the inability to be able to cope and manage independently. Sleep disturbance, poor diet and lack of physical activity can increase anxiety issues.

For some people life can become unmanageable without the support and guidance of trained professionals.

A short course of CBT can be an effective treatment option for individuals experiencing anxiety issues. This involves discussion on various aspects in your life, focusing on your thoughts and beliefs and the impact this can have on negative thoughts and behaviour.
