Bi Polar Disorder also known as Manic Depression is a mood disorder whereby people may experience highs and lows with regards to moods and usually signs of depressive illness. Bi Polar can be characterised by one or more episode of mania followed by one or more episode of depression.
A person may seem excitable and full of energy during low levels of mania. During higher levels they may demonstrate impulsive or erratic behaviour, making irrational decisions due to improbable future ideas. Psychotic behaviour and violence may be displayed at the highest level, also the individual may have depressive episodes or a mixture of both. At worst manic episodes can lead to psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions. Risk of harm to ones self or others cause concern in more serious cases.
Bi Polar can be difficult to diagnose as not everyone symptoms will be the same. Some of the following signs and symptoms may be displayed or experienced.
Depressive Episodes
- Mood swings, anger, sadness, anxiety, guilt, irritability, isolation or hopelessness
- Sleep disturbance, fatigue
- Disruptive appetite
- Inability to enjoy social activities, social anxiety
- Lack of interest in sexual activity, relationships
- Chronic pain (without case)
- Low self esteem/self worth, no motivation
- Suicidal thoughts, delusions or hallucinations
Manic Episodes
- Elevated energy levels
- Difficulties falling asleep
- Racing thoughts, low attention, easily distracted
- Irrational behaviours and impaired judgement
- Substance abusive
- Intolerant, aggressive or intrusive behaviours
- Loss of control and delusional ideas
- Psychosis
- Rage or anxiety issues
Hypomanic Episode
It can be difficult to diagnose Hypomanic episodes, as generally it does not stop the person functioning unlike mania. Due to increased energy levels some individuals may become more productive, however, others may demonstrate poor judgement and irritability. Some individuals have a heightened interest in sexual activities. A person experiencing Hypomania may feel good and deny that there is anything wrong, on occasions during Hypomania the individual may have difficulties recollecting events that took place. Symptoms for Hypomania most commonly continue for a few weeks to a couple on months.

We provide one to one support with a therapist to identify the core issues and triggers relating to the disorder. Group therapy, workshops, talks, meditation and relaxation techniques, holistic/creative therapies, exercise, nutrition and general overall well-being will also be incorporated in the programme
We put a huge emphasis on family therapy, CBT and psychoeducation with regards to relapse prevention. Coping strategies and aftercare will be arranged on completion of the programme.
