1. OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder which manifests itself in ritualistic behaviours, and an excessive need for control. It is estimated that around 1.2% of the UK population suffers from this debilitating condition. OCD is a form of process disorder in which the brain can get caught on particular thought patterns. These repeating thoughts can become harmful, especially when the resulting behaviours affect the sufferer’s everyday functions.

Managing OCD

If an obsessive compulsive disorder is spiralling out of control, seek professional help as soon as possible. When left untreated, an OCD patient’s behaviour patterns can become extremely debilitating and even dangerous. The good news is, OCD can be managed with clinical rehabilitation treatment, and we offer specialist OCD clinics designed to help you break the obsessive compulsive cycle for good.

Common treatments for OCD include:

– Talk therapies
– Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
– Support groups
– Medication
– Residential rehabilitation

Our clinicians will work closely with you to identify the key triggers for your OCD, and to help you manage the thought patterns that drive this condition. Through a tailored treatment plan, we help you take back control of your mind and deal with the underlying causes of your condition.

2. Love and sex addictions

There is often a link between relationships and mental health issues, and we see many patients who report addiction to sex or to relationships. We offer sex addiction rehab and love addiction rehab for patients throughout the UK. If you are experiencing difficulties in your personal life, due to your own sexual or romantic behaviours, we offer help and support to put you back in control of your feelings. Sex addiction or love addiction can be damaging not just to yourself, but to your partner, your family and friends. It can also impact on your work, and affect your everyday life. If you feel you might be suffering with sex addiction or a similar issue, get in touch today.

Understanding sex addiction

Sex addiction is often misunderstood, with some believing it is an excuse by their partner to justify their indiscretions. However, sexual addiction is clinically recognised and frequently treated by therapists. It is often diagnosed when a patient is engaging in frequent and highly risky sexual behaviours, and when they feel they have lost control of their desires and are constantly seeking sexual gratification in some form.

The condition is often a co-occurring disorder, which may be seen in patients already suffering from bipolar disorder, depression or a borderline personality disorder. There is also a reported link between patients requiring sex addiction rehab and patients who have experienced abuse. Patents with a sex addiction may also present with an addiction to pornography, including to harmful and even illegal materials. They may engage in other illegal behaviours, such as soliciting sex from prostitutes or coercing sex from partners.

Using a blend of cognitive behavioural therapy and talk therapies (particularly group therapy) is an effective way to tackle the underlying causes of sex addiction, and to help patients overcome their compulsive behaviours. Sometimes couple counselling can also help, as it can give the partner of an addict a deeper understanding of their loved one’s issues. Our skilled therapists identify and tackle the root cause of the addiction, equipping patients with the knowledge and tools they need to break the cycle and overcome their problems.

Managing love addiction

Love addiction is not as widely recognised as sex addiction, but it is a disorder often seen by our clinicians. With a love addiction, patients quickly form intense emotional attachments, sometimes with inappropriate partners, and they are extremely affected when the relationship breaks down. They may mistake sexual advances for signs of love, can cling to damaging and even dangerous relationships, and will likely feel deeply depressed when not in a relationship.

Like sex addiction, love addiction frequently co-occurs with depressive disorders and personality disorders. We provide love addiction rehab treatment for patients who are experiencing difficulties in their personal lives as a result of their inability to form and keep healthy relationships. Love addiction rehab will include one-on-one counselling, group therapies, CBT and other forms of behaviour-focused rehabilitative support.

Betrayal and relationship trauma

As well as supporting addicts, we also provide support services for the partners and loved ones who experience emotional trauma during the addiction phase. The stress of a partner’s sex addiction can lead to problems such as anxiety, low self-esteem, obsessive characteristics, and a generally unhealthy state of mental being. Our skilled therapists work with both halves of a couple where sex addiction or love addiction is diagnosed, delivering holistic support that tackles the problem at all levels.

3. Gambling addictions

Gambling addiction is a widespread and damaging problem. The Gambling Commission estimates that 400,000 UK adults have a gambling addiction, and a further 1.6 million are identified as ‘at risk’ of developing a gambling problem. Gambling addiction can be diagnosed when one or more of the following conditions are met by a patient:

– Gambling more than they can afford to spend
– Gambling on a daily or even hourly basis
– Getting into debt or financial difficulty to gamble
– Hiding gambling activity from others, especially partners and families
– Missing work or neglecting responsibilities to gamble
– Feeling a compulsive urge to gamble

Gambling addiction is pathological rather than physiological. The urge to gamble only lasts a few minutes at a time, but during that time it is very difficult for a patient to ignore. Self-exclusion programmes can help to limit access to gambling, but an addict will almost always find another way to fuel their need.

Instead, gambling addiction should be treated in a similar manner to a clinical addiction such as substance abuse or alcoholism. Residential gambling rehab programmes can be a huge support in the early days of treatment, as the patient is removed from any environment in which they have a chance to gamble. Once they feel they have regained control of their addiction, an ongoing support programme of group and individual therapies, tailored to the patient, is the most effective way to prevent a relapse.

Gambling rehab provides the early stages of treatment, but the patient will need ongoing support in the months and year after rehabilitation ends. The urges to gamble may never fully subside, but with the right treatment and support we can help problem gamblers take control of their addictions and remain free from gambling in the future.

4. Eating disorders

Eating disorders are characterised by an unhealthy relationship with food. Eating disorders attack both mental and physical health, and the effects can be permanent and in the worst cases, can prove fatal. There are many reasons an eating disorder can develop, and the reasons behind such conditions require a long term treatment plan with a holistic approach to recovery.

The conditions we can treat include, but are not limited to, the following:

– Anorexia
– Bulimia
– Binge-eating disorders
– Purging disorders
– Orthorexia
– Diabulimia

We also help patients with non-specific eating disorders, and with co-occurring conditions. For example, patients in recovery from anorexia may go on to develop bulimia, or bulimic patients who develop type 2 diabetes might go on to become diabulimic. Understanding these complex conditions, and why the patient develops them, is the key to recovery. Eating disorders often manifest alongside mental health issues, or occur as the result of trauma.

We help our patients rediscover a healthy relationship with food. This may be done in conjunction with a medical treatment plan, especially where extreme weight loss or gain needs clinical treatment. We concentrate on the causes of the disorder and on how to combat negative associations with food.

Eating disorder treatment plans often include several common elements, such as:

– Group therapy
– One on one counselling
– Residential rehab or outpatient rehab
– Medical treatment and monitoring
– Anti-depressive medications
– Cognitive behavioural therapy
– Food intake monitoring
– Nutritional support and advice

Through a carefully designed treatment programme, we help our patients gain control over their eating habits again, replacing a damaging relationship with food with a positive, nutrition-based future plan. During residential rehab, we provide a balanced meal schedule that puts the right nutrients back into the body. Where other issues such as mental health disorders coexist with the eating disorder, we make sure to tackle the root cause and give you the best chance of beating the problem for good. We also support you throughout your recovery and beyond.

5. Other addictive disorders

There are many types of addiction, and though some are less common than others, any addiction can have a devastating effect on an individual. We are equipped to deal with all addictive disorders, offering a structured treatment programme that includes support during rehabilitation and recovery.

Some of the addictions we regularly see at our clinics include:

– Shopping and spending addictions
– Internet and gaming addictions
– Compulsive stealing (kleptomania)
– Compulsive firesetting (pyromania)
– Self-harming
– Exercise addictions
– Spiritual or religious obsessions

Anything has the potential to lead to addiction if a person does it too often, or allows it to take over their normal life. Some addictions are more damaging than others physically, but all addiction has a serious negative effect on a person’s mental health. Even a positive activity, such as keeping fit, can become addictive and lead to serious damaging consequences for the addict.

Treating addictive disorders

Some patients are more prone than others to developing addictions. This is frequently referred to as having an ‘addictive personality’. Often a person who has gained control over an addiction will shift their focus to another activity, so we work closely with recovering addicts to ensure they don’t develop new addictions in lieu of their previous habits.

It is important to understand exactly why your addiction developed, and why it is dangerous for you. Our experienced therapists work closely with you to discover the root cause of your addiction, and to ensure that you have the skills and coping strategies to break free. Overcoming addiction is a journey, and one which might lead you back to the start several times before you regain control. However, with the support of our rehabilitation team you have the best chance possible to finally beat your addiction and put yourself on the road to recovery.

6. Mental health clinics

We all feel a little stressed from time to time, but what should we do when that stress becomes too much and we are struggling to cope? World Health Organisation figures suggest that one in four people will experience mental health issues during their lifetime. Mental health disorders are characterised by unhealthy thought patterns which can overwhelm an individual and greatly affect their quality of life. Depression and anxiety are among the most common, but there are many, many ways in which poor mental health can manifest itself.

Mental health issues generally fall under these broad categories:

– Manic disorders
– Depressive disorders
– Compulsive disorders
– Personality disorders
– Psychotic disorders
– Anxiety disorders

Our trained clinicians handle a wide range of mental health problems through our residential rehab service and our daycare and support services. From depression clinics to bipolar treatment, we help you understand your diagnosis better and we equip you with the skills and techniques to cope with it.

Our therapies include:

– Monitored medication
– Residential rehab
– Outpatient care
– Counselling
– Group therapies
– Sufferer support groups
– Cognitive behavioural therapies

Any treatment plan you undertake will be based around your personal circumstances, and targeted at your specific condition or conditions. We work closely with you to determine how your diagnosis fits the symptoms you present, and how your conditions are affecting your lifestyle and wellbeing. Once the root cause of your issue has been identified, we start to work on coping strategies and treatments that will hand you back control over your health.

Identifying a mental health problem

Many mental health conditions go undetected for far too long. Patients are often afraid to seek help, scared of being judged and stigmatised. Our depression clinics and mental health rehab services provide a confidential and understanding environment where you can feel safe to open up about your feelings. We listen to you and we take the time to understand exactly what your needs are. Though we can’t cure the condition itself, we can make it manageable for you through a tailored programme of medication, talk therapies and CBT.

If you are suffering from anxiety or stress, depression or uncontrollable emotions, we can help. Mental health issues often take a toll on your physical health too, and many patients write off psychological symptoms as physical ones. Excessive sleeping or insomnia, fatigue, loss of appetite, mood swings, digestive issues and headaches can all point to an underlying depressive condition.

Signs of bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder, once known as ‘manic depression’ is a common mental health condition characterised by extreme mood swings. Sufferers can quickly switch from feelings of elation to very low moods. These mood swings often come with sets of damaging behaviours.

Though manic episodes come with positive emotions, such as self-confidence and motivation, the patient may be unable to control these feelings. They might make poor decisions or engage in risky activities. Some will even become delusional, and may hallucinate. During the depressive phases, the patient is likely to be swamped with negative feelings about themselves and others. These can include suicidal thoughts or acts, self-harm, isolating from society, and an inability to care for oneself properly.

Though bipolar disorder is a complex condition and difficult to manage, the right treatment programme can help sufferers take back control and deal with their condition on a daily basis. We create treatment plans for our patients based on their individual needs and circumstances, taking a holistic approach to mental health care.

Depression and anxiety

Two of the most common indicators for mental health issues are anxiety and depression. As well as being symptoms of a wide number of clinical conditions, depression and anxiety are mental health problems in their own right. They can appear together or separately, and each can have a devastating impact on a person’s life.

Anxiety can manifest itself in many ways:

– Social anxiety
– Panic disorders
– Health anxiety
– Fears and phobias
– Generalised anxiety

Some anxiety disorders have very specific triggers, while others can strike at seemingly random times. It is important that each patient understands exactly how their own anxiety is triggered, and why it happens. We offer anxiety rehab services that include CBT and talk therapies, aimed at helping you overcome panic attacks and feelings of anxiety whenever they strike. Regain your confidence and take back control of your mind with our mental health treatment programmes. We also offer depression clinics for patients who struggle with depressive episodes, including residential rehabilitation for extreme cases of depression or anxiety.

7. Managing a dual diagnosis

A dual diagnosis is the common term used to describe co-occurring mental health conditions or addictions. Often, patients do not present with a single issue but they come to us with two or more co-existing problems. For example, a patient with a drug addiction or alcoholism may develop their substance addiction because they tried to self-medicate their feelings, or a patient with anxiety may present with an eating disorder instead, as they try to take back some control of their feelings through controlling their diet.

The reasons behind any mental health condition or addiction are complex and very personal. Below are just some of the causes of process disorders in the patients we see:

– Recent or historic trauma
– Abuse
– Ill health
– Family breakdowns
– Unemployment
– Stress

Whether the patient is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, psychosis, depression or some form of addiction, we are here to help. We understand the complexities of dual diagnosis conditions and co-occurring conditions, and we create a treatment plan that tackles all aspects of your mental health as a single holistic programme or recovery.

8. Rehabilitation and support

We are here all the way through your recovery journey. We make sure you have everything you need to handle your own condition or addiction, whether that be CBT and coping strategies, medication, talking therapies or a combination of all three. In addition to residential rehab to help you break the problem cycle, we stay in touch long after you return home and we provide ongoing care and support so that you remain on a positive track in the future.

Information for family members

Our treatment programmes work only when we have a co-operative patient who engages with our rehabilitative services. It can be extremely difficult to see a loved one battling an addiction or struggling with their mental health, but we cannot force anyone into a recovery programme against their will. What we can do is provide you with detailed information about our services, and guidance on raising your concerns with the patient in a non-confrontational manner.

Our work with our patients follows strict confidentiality guidelines. We cannot disclose personal details about treatment to an individual’s family members without their consent. However, we strongly encourage our patients to be open and honest with their loved ones and to make them a key part of their recovery process.

Having the support of caring friends and relatives can help a recovering addict stay clean, and can prevent a serious relapse in a patient with a mental health issue. We often arrange therapy sessions where loved ones are encouraged to take part, and we do allow scheduled visits to our residential rehab patients when we feel their recovery is underway and they are strong enough for such contact.

If you have any questions for us or if you need the support of our rehab team, please contact us today. We can arrange immediate admission for urgent cases and we aim to start treatment without delay once a patient makes the decision to seek help. We can offer advice and guidance on all aspects of disorder and addiction management, and we provide an ongoing aftercare service that works to prevent relapses after the rehabilitation phase has ended. patient in a non-confrontational manner.
